Be Kind to the Planet With Eco-Friendly Window Coverings
When giving your home a face-lift by changing out your draperies and window coverings, you have environmentally friendly options. This is a good time to consider eco-friendly fabrics for your windows. Environmentally friendly materials can range from bamboo, natural grasses & reeds to hemp, organic cotton, sustainable harvested silk and responsible linen’s.
There are many choices in styles in the area of eco-friendly window coverings. Regardless of whether you like an elegant look with pleated drapes or a more modern, contemporary look using metal grommets, or a completely casual look, your window coverings can have a very small impact on our environment.
Look for the most eco-friendly options by finding those using plant based dyes:
• Hemp – Hemp can be grown organically using no pesticides or chemicals and makes a very strong, long lasting and durable fabric. Care and cleaning is an easy option wit this material as well.
• Organic Cotton – generally considered to be better than conventionally grown cotton for it’s sustainability and it’s available in solids or prints.
• Sustainable Silk – Fabrics made from sustainable silk are beautiful and elegant and the process is designed to not harm the moths as they are emerging from their silk cocoons.
• Linen – Also makes a beautiful drape. You will also see linen which is blended with hemp, organic cotton or bamboo at times.
• Bamboo – Bamboo is a grass, very fast growing and can be made into a wonderful fabric with a variety of design options.
